GUYANA'S AMERINDIANS IN 2001
|
|
In Guyana Amerindians comprise 7% of the 750,000 national population -
approximately 52,500 persons, and inhabit 93% of the landmass of the
country. All other ethnic groups inhabit only 7% of Guyana.
There are 100 Amerindian villages in Guyana, 15 of them are Confederacy villages - and these 15 comprise 25% of the total Amerindian population of Guyana - approximately 13,125 Amerindians are Confederacy citizens. 85% of the Amerindian population in Guyana falls BELOW the national poverty line because of the locally legal but internationally illegal policy of labelling Amerindian territories as 'State land' - it is not hard to figure out why as the Amerindian territories contain ALL of the mineral riches (Diamonds, Gold etc.) in Guyana. United Nations ILO Convention 169 which recognises the mineral wealth on/in/under Amerindian lands as being Amerindian property has never been ratified by any Guyana government to this day. The Confederacy has offered a reasonable compromise whereby 7% of the National budget be ACTUALLY provided to Amerindian communities, the Guyana governments are fond of touting great theoretical sums that 'have been allocated to the Amerindians' but most of this never gets beyond the red-tape and outright thievery of a handful of NON-Amerindians who have the responsibility of dispensing the funds. This is why the Confederacy completey bi-passes state organs and seeks direct funding abroad for our grass-roots endeavours in our individual communities. Ofcourse the communities and 'Amerindian NGO's' who become political pimps and allow themselves to be manipulated by the powers that be - do achieve hand outs as a reward. The Confederacy will continue to be politically neutral. The Pan-Tribal Confederacy refuses to register itself as a mere Non Governmental Organization - maintaining that we are in fact a Traditional local government of the 15% of Guyana's 100 Amerindian communities that have joined our alliance/union; so we are refused official recognition by the Guyana government. The only Amerindian representative bodies officially recognised by the Guyana government are the - GOIP (Guyanese Organization of Indigenous Peoples), APA (Amerindian Peoples Association), and TAAMOG (The Amerindian Action Movement of Guyana). The two dominant political parties in Guyana are for all intents and purposes driven by Ethnic politics and are the - Ruling PPP(People's Progressive Party) dominated by East Indians (50% of the national population), and the opposition PNC (People's National Congress) dominated by Africans (40% of the national population). The only political party in Guyana that has Europeans & Amerindians in the top party leadership is the GAP (Guyana Action Party) - and in the Confederacy stronghold of Guyana's Region 9 our supporters voted en-masse for this party in March 2001 - enabling them to win the 2 parliamentary seats for this region. The national motto is 'one people, one nation, one destiny', but the sad truth is that most Guyanese, deep in their hearts, dislike every other ethnic group - that is why it is the only country in the entire English Speaking Caribbean to have experienced 'Race Riots' - and will most likely experience them again; though Amerindian, Chinese and European Guyanese generally stay out of this nonsense. The average East Indian on the street will confidentially express their conviction that "Blacks are lazy, don't want to work - only rob you of what you worked hard for", and the average African on the street will tell you "East Indians are materialistic rip-offs and con-men not to be trusted"....seems the 'masses' are indeed the 'asses' as China's dictator Moa Tse Tung once said; so much for the national motto.
The nine Amerindian Tribal Nations of Guyana are the: Many Amerindian households suffer from the 'development paradox' where the avaiibility of money results in lower nutritional intake. A mere 0.1% of the Amerindian population has received a Tertiary level education. The Amerindian territories that lack land title and thereby do not legally exist as such (according to Guyana law) are :
In Guyana's administrative region #10
In region # 9 (The Confederacy's stronghold)
In region # 8
In region # 7
In region # 1 |
